Town Hall Meeting Agenda and MinutesMarch 4, 2024 League of Women Voters
Speakers Bureau Topic: Democracy Dollars and Ranked Choice Voting Each year, the local League of Women Voters of San Diego considers which areas of advocacy we wish to pursue in the coming election year. There are two initiatives under consideration locally that have been nominated which we believe contribute to creating a more robust democracy for voters. The first of these is Democracy Dollars, which provides a mechanism for public financing of elections and eliminates the influence of outside money on local candidates. The second, Ranked Choice Voting is a means by which voters have the opportunity to recognize more than one candidate as a potential representative. It has been used successfully in numerous election processes, both at the local and state levels and has several advantages over the current winner-take all system. In this presentation, we explore the pros and cons of these two methods of voter engagement in the election process. Brief History of the League of Women Voters The League of Women Voters was officially founded in Chicago in 1920, just six months before the 19th amendment was ratified and women won the vote. For over 100 years, we have been a nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that believes voters should play a critical role in democracy. We never endorse nor oppose political parties or candidates, but we may take a stand on certain issues, if they coincide with positions the League has adopted in keeping with our mission. The local San Diego League was established in 1936, and part of our mission has been to educate voters about issues they are facing, providing a nonpartisan perspective to allow for informed decision making.
